Taxonomy Identification: Family, Nymphalidae. First named by Hewitson in 1862
Colour: A sexually dimorphic species, the male butterfly is dark chocolate brown with a purple sheen on the hind-wing. The female is brown with pale streaks, but lacks the vivid purple sheen. The underside wings on box sexes have a silvery-blue base colour with reddish-orange patterns.
Size: Wingspan 70-80mm
Comments & Applications: This is a widespread butterfly found throughout Australasia with many localised sub-species. The butterflies purple sheen on the hind-wing makes this species a popular choice among butterfly framers and the wider art and crafts movement.
