Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, Amathusiini. First named by Fruhstorfer, in 1904.
Colour: Topside (recto) dark chocolate brown with broad cream bar across forewings, hindwing dark with bright orange patches. The (verso) underside is a mixture of dark/light brown with a cream bar on the forewing. Hindwings have the classic ‘owlet’ markings.
Size: Wingspan Male 100-120mm – Females 110-140mm
Comments & Applications: A spectacular species with amazing bright orange colouration and eye like wing markings, commonly known as the Jungle King butterfly. The “eyes” act as a detractor to predators such as birds. A seldom offered collectors species – also popular for it’s size for framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film industry
