Taxonomy Identification: Family Hesperiidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The topside (recto) is golden range on both sexes, male has a short black line on forewing (sex brand). Underside hindwing pale brown forewing more orange. Distinguished from the small skipper by the antenna tips which are glossy black.
Size: Wingspan 24-30mm
Comments & Applications: A small delicate species, isolated to the midlands and southern England. Widespread across Europe. Dried butterflies make the perfect subject for school science projects or taxonomic reference collections. Also for framing, domes, photography, interior design and film applications.
NOTE: Small Hesperiidae are notoriously difficult to taxidermy – not recommended for beginners.
Sourcing: All our British butterflies are either captive bred or from antique collections.
