Taxonomy Identification: Family Hesperiidae. First named by Poda in 1761
Colour: A golden brown butterfly, sexes are similar. The male is distinguished from the female by the black line or sex brand on its forewings. The underside (verso) wings are a mixture of greenish bronze with orange patches.
Size: Wingspan 24-29 mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread butterfly found across the whole of Britain and common throughout Europe into North Africa and the Middle East. Easily mistaken for the similar coloured Essex skipper. In the small skipper, the undersides of the tips of the antennae are yellow orange, whereas they are black in the Essex skipper.
