Taxonomy Identification: Family Papilionidae, Troidini. First named by Staudinger in 1885
Colour: the topside (recto) forewings of the female are dark brown with white edged veins, the hind-wings carry dashes of white with green patches. The male base colour is black with iridescent rows of green patches and triangles across all four wings.
Size: Wingspan up to 160-180mm (female larger)
Comments & Applications: This stunning bird-wing is among the largest species of butterfly in the world. The species conservation status is listed as “near threatened”. Our specimens are captive bred on specialist breeding farms, or from antique collections. Across the butterflies range there are several sub-species. We do not sell wild caught birdwing’s.
This is a butterfly for the serious connoisseur, also useful in high end applications where the customer is looking for something different from the norm.
