Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The topside (recto) of the fore wings is black with vivid red bar and white patches at wing tips. The recto hind-wing is black with red margin. The underside (verso) forewing is similar to the topside but paler. The verso hind-wing is mottled brown and black with a hint of blueish-moss green.
Size: Wingspan 62-72mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread species, across Europe and North America. Commonly known as Red Admiral due to the butterflies vivid red markings. Common across Britain seen especially in late summer feeding on Buddleia followers and rotting fruit. Popular among collectors and ideal for photographic, art and design projects.
