Taxonomy Identification: Family Sphingidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The upper forewings are dark brown, while the hind-wings are bright yellow with blackish blue bars. Abdomen is coloured in blackish blue and yellow stripes.
Size: Wingspan 80-105 mm
Comments & Applications: This stunning moth derives its name from the vaguely skull-shaped pattern adorning the thorax. The deaths head hawk appears in popular media, including the films The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Dracula (1958), and The Blood Beast Terror (1967). Having captured the imagination of many this is a much sought after species with both collector and trade.
