Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Sexually dimorphic. Male topside (recto) wings features three prominent spots, two on the forewing and one on the hindwing. To a human observer these appear as white spots fringed with blue-violet. The Female wings are coloured dark brown-black with a cream border on lower wings.
Size: Wingspan 65-75mm
