Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae, First discovered by Rottemburg in 1775.
Colour: Male topside (recto) brilliant sky blue, with a fine black line round the edge and a white margin. The female is chocolate brown with a few blue scales near the base, and with orange spots, bordered by blue scales, around the edge of the hind wing. The fringes are chequered both sexes.
Size: Wingspan 25-30mm
Comments & Applications: The Adonis Blue is a rare UK butterfly it’s distribution limited by the distribution of the larval food plant Horseshoe Vetch which, in turn, follows the distribution of chalk and limestone grassland. Common on the continent, the bright vivid blue of the male makes this a very popular butterfly with the trade used for framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film.
