Taxonomy Identification: Family, Orthoptera. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The adult grasshopper is extremely colourful, having large red compound eyes, a boldly patterned black, white, red and yellow body and legs, and greenish membranous wings.
Size: Male body length 35-40mm, wingspan 80-100mm – Females body length 40-45mm, wingspan 30-50mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful Grasshopper from Africa commonly called the painted grasshopper due to its amazing colouration. At times this grasshopper can be an agricultural pest, it is also widely eaten as a food source. Applications include art, design, graft, wall hangings framing domes, photography and education
NOTE: Dried specimens loose the intense colour of living examples and are much darker
