Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Hymenoptera, sub-family Ichneumonidae first named by Miller in 1759
Colour: Overall colour black. Legs orange. Wings are semi-transparent with black veins. Female has long straight black ovipositor.
Size: Body length 10-15mm, Wingspan 20-25mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread parasitic wasp of moth and butterfly pupae. Very similar in appearance to Apechthis compunctor. The female has a long sting-like spike on the abdomen which is actually the ovipositor used for laying eggs inside the host! The male lacks the long tail. Rarely offered for sale.
This weird wasp is a nice addition to any entomological reference collection, especially British insect collections. Also useful for educational purposes, fine art, and macro photography.
