Taxonomy Identification: Family Catocala. First named by Linnaeus in 1767
Colour: Forewing grey with intricate black and white patterns. Hind-wings a vivid black and red.
Size: Wingspan 60-75 mm
Comments & Applications: One of Britain’s larger sized moths. Locally common in southern England and West wales, less frequent elsewhere and absent North of Yorkshire.
