Taxonomy Identification: Family Catocala. First named by Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775
Colour: Forewing greyish brown with intricate black and white patterns. Hind-wings a vivid black and crimson red.
Size: Wingspan 58-68 mm
Comments & Applications: A spectacular moth with crimson red hind-wing. A very local species, now restricted to mature Oak forests in Southern England. One for the connoisseur. Also useful in education, film, media, interior design
