Taxonomy Identification: Family Catocala. First named by Linnaeus in 1767
Colour: Forewing dark brown with intricate black and white patterns. Hind-wings a vivid black and crimson red.
Size: Wingspan 58-75 mm
Comments & Applications: A spectacular moth with crimson red hind-wing. A very local species, now restricted to the New Forrest. One for the connoisseur. Also useful in education, film, media, interior design
