Taxonomy Identification: Family Sphingidae, First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Deep olive green with darker green or brown patches and hints of pink. Underside (verso) similar but paler. Specimens from Africa darker olive often with more vivid pink.
Size: Wingspan 80-120 mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful and rare vagrant species in Britain, which does not occur in every year, but can turn up almost anywhere, but normally seen on the southern coast of England. Native to Sicily, Crete, Cyprus and northern Africa. Sub-saharan specimens darker with more vivid pink. This species is extremely popular among the art and craft industry for interior design work, frames or domes. Also a great subject for photography or film, entertainment and educational purposes.
