Taxonomy Identification: Family Notodontidae. First named by Hufnagel, in 1766
Colour: Highly variable colouration, ranging from light brown/black and cream to melanic dark brown. Forewings have a small black lunar shape. Hind-wing colouration varies form ivory to grey-brown.
Size: Wingspan 35-40 mm
Comments & Applications: Common throughout the southern half of Britain, absent or scarce elsewhere. This moth derives its English name from the small lunar crescent shape on the forewing.
