Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Notodontidae. First named by Brahm in 1787
Colour: Forewing forewings are grey, with a broad, dark grey central band. Hind-wings grey-white. Similar in appearance to Sallow Kitten, this species is however usually larger, and the outer edge of the grey wing bar is more smoothly curved with a prominent darker edge.
Size: Wingspan 35-45 mm
Comments & Applications: Kitten moths derive their common name from their cute fluffy grey-white appearance ‘pussycat moths’ – the larvae of this species feed on Populus trees, hence the common name ‘Poplar Kitten’. This species has a restricted distribution in the United Kingdom, occurring mostly in southern England and Wales.
