Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Notodontidae. First named by Clerk in 1759
Colour: Forewings white with a large grey middle band. Hind-wings white with grey dotted margin. Similar to the Poplar Kitten, but generally smaller and the shape of the black line forming the outer margin of the central band; this is always more or less angled or dentate towards the front margin of the wings, whereas, in the poplar kitten, this portion of the line forms a clean curve.
Size: Wingspan 27-37 mm
Comments & Applications: Kitten moths derive their common name from their cute fluffy grey-white appearance ‘pussycat moths’ – the larvae of this species feed on Salix trees, hence the common name ‘Sallow Kitten’. This species has the widest distribution found throughout the United Kingdom.
