Taxonomy Identification: Family Lasiocampidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The overall colour is dark brown with black scalloped lines. Females much larger.
Size: Wingspan Males 50-60 – Females 80-90mm
Comments & Applications: One of Britain’s most spectacular species of moth whose latin name quercifolia refers not to the foodplant but to the moth’s resemblance to a cluster of dried oak leaves when at rest. The English name describes the caterpillar, which has fleshy ‘lappets’ or skirts along the sides. This species is locally common in the south and south-east of Britain
