Taxonomy Identification: Family Sphingidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The wings of this moth are clear, with brown veins and brown outer border. The thorax and abdomen is olive green with a black bar and reddish buff tip.
Size: Wingspan 35-48mm
Comments & Applications: This small hawk-moth is a day-flying species inhabiting marshy area where its food plant Devils Bit Scabious grows. As its common name suggests the moth resembles a “bee” yet fly’s like a “hummingbird” with incredible agility. Highly prized among lepidopterists, we are pleased to offer a limited number of captive bred examples.
While a must have reference species, this moth is also popular among the art and crafts, for use in wall hangings, photography, domes etc.
