Taxonomy Identification: Family Erebidae > Hypeninae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Sexually dimorphic, the male forewing is brown with very faint black marks (absent in some examples). The female is similar but has prominent black markings on the forewing. The hind-wing of both sexes are silver-brown.
Size: Wingspan 27-32 mm
Comments & Applications: A locally common species now restricted to the south-east of England. Quite plain looking but collectable. They get their English name from their long, unturned palps which look like a snout.
Perfect if you are starting your own British Moth reference collection. Also useful in education, film, media, artistry and interior design, craft frames and domes.
