Taxonomy Identification: Family Sphingidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The topside (recto) forewings are generally grey with darker and paler grey/brown patterns. On the hindwing is a reddish brown patch. Some specimens can be very pale brown, especially females.
Size: Wingspan 58-75mm
Comments & Applications: Found throughout the British Isles. At first glance this moths scalloped edged forewing and colouration resembles a dried leaf. It is distinctive due to its habit of resting with its hindwings held further forward than (but still half hidden by) the forewings.
British Hawk-moth’s are extremely collectable – perfect for framers and the art and design industry.
