Taxonomy Identification: Family Geometridae. First named by Denis & Schiffermüller in 1775
Colour: Forewings greyish-black with cream white markings, hind-wing colouration similar; vividness of markings variable between specimens
Size: Wingspan Male 24-30 mm – Female wingless
Comments & Applications: A very scarce and local species, occurring on sand hills or salt marshes in a few scattered localities in Cheshire, North Wales, North Lancashire and Scotland. The English and Welsh populations make up the sub-species brittanica, and those in Scotland are ssp. atlantica. The female of this species is wingless. This is a super species to add to your Entomological reference collection. Also useful in science and school education, film, media, artistry and interior design
