Taxonomy Identification: Family Saturniidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Sexually dimorphic. Male forewings are grey-brown with white outer edge, hindwings golden orange. Female wings grey with white markings and red/pink wing tip. Both sexes have the classic silk-moth eye-spot (ocelli) on each wing.
Size: Wingspan 60-75 mm
Comments & Applications: The spectacular Emperor moth is Britain’s only resident member of the Saturniidae (silk-moth) family. It is reasonably common over much of Britain, occupying moorland and open country.
Perfect if you are starting your own British Moth reference collection. Also useful in education, film, media, artistry and interior design, craft frames and domes.
