Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Saturniidae. First named by Denis & Schiffermüller, in 1775

Colour: Highly variable, the forewing base colour is grey with blackish brown patch. Various zig-zag patterns overlay the forewing ranging from reddish to buff to black. The forewing margin is cream and buff. Hind-wings are grey or buff with darker charcoal outer edge. Each wing encompasses a single black eye-marking (ocelli) ringed in buff-red and black sometimes centred with a hint of blue.

Size: Wingspan 95-135 mm

Comments & Applications:  This huge and impressive silk-moth is Europe’s largest moth species. Sadly not resident in Britain the last occurrence being in Hampshire in 1984, although this may have been a captive bred escape. The moth is commonly called the Peacock Moth referring to its spectacular appearance.

Overall a popular moth among Lepidoptera collectors. Perfect if you are starting your own British Moth reference collection. Also useful in education, film, media, artistry and interior design, craft frames and domes.
