Taxonomy Identification: Family Hymenoptera, first named by Linnaeus in 1764
Colour: Overall blackish wasp with yellowish-brown band on the abdomen. On dried specimens the yellow tends to fade to pale brown.
Size: Body length 34mm, Wingspan 48mm
Comments & Applications: A large tropical wasp commonly called the Lesser Banded Hornet because of the yellow band on the abdomen/tail. Gained notoriety in Indonesia for its aggressive behavior and powerful sting, which has a potential for causing a life-threatening anaphylaxis. Dried specimens harmless. Seldom offered for sale. A nice addition to any entomological reference collection. Also useful for educational purposes, fine art, and macro photography.
