Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Hymenoptera. First identified by Smith in 1852.
Colour: Wings are clear with black veins. The head, is yellow, thorax brown and abdomen striped brown/black and yellow.
Size: Body length 40-45mm, Wingspan 50-60mm.
Comments & Applications: This huge hornet wasp is highly prized among collectors. Most sought after sub-species from Japan, known as the ōsuzumebachi, literally “great sparrow bee” – our Thai examples are form ‘bellona’ and darker. Famous for its raids on honey bee hives.
Always a favourite with collectors and sought after by the art and craft industry, photography, framing, interior design, film, entertainment and educational purposes
