Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Hymenoptera, first named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Overall black and yellow striped body. On dried specimens the yellow tends to fade.
Size: Body length 12-17mm, Wingspan 17-20mm
Comments & Applications: This is the wasp which we mostly come into contact with in the UK. Colloquially called “jaspers” or “yellow jackets”. Different species of wasp can be identified by their mask, alongside the markings on their abdomen. The face of the common wasp usually has an anchor mark and the malar space (the distance between the eye and the jaw) is very short. Antennae are black at the base. Thoracic stripes are parallel sided. Four yellow spots at the rear of the thorax. While a very common species it is paradoxically difficult to obtain quality specimens for research, photography, artwork as most wasps are destroyed.
Format: Supplied Papered/unmounted requires relaxing and setting
