Taxonomy Identification: Family Arctiidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The topside (recto) forewings are brown with cream patterns. The hindwing is red with blue-black spots. The underside (verso) is similar but much paler.
Size: Wingspan 55-65mm
Comments & Applications: A well known British moth, famous for its “wooly bear” caterpillar. Sadly in decline and much scarcer than in previous generations. Widely distributed in the Northern hemisphere, across Europe, Canada and the USA. The adult moths are spectacular with vivid patterns and colours. Very popular among framers and the art and design industry. Also highly collectable among entomologists.
