Taxonomy Identification: Family Arctiinae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Black forewings with bright red streak and spots. Hind-wings bright red with a thin black marginal border. A colour form, f. flavescens is found occasionally, with the red markings replaced with a yellowish tint.
Size: Wingspan 32-42mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful shimmering red and black moth, often seen during the day. Commonly known as the Cinnabar moth named after the red mineral cinnabar because of the red patches on its predominantly black wings. A favourite among entomologists, perfect for art and craft projects or educational reference.
